Explore Machakos

Machakos town is located about 60 kilometres southeast of Nairobi and stretches down along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.


It borders Makueni to the South, Kitui to the east and Kajiado to the west. It was first established as a centre for Akamba trading administration and currently it has earned a reputation of being a tourist hub in the country. Bearing in mind that the county leads in development at county level, it now stands to gain more revenue from tourism. Its situation at the base of five hills, make it an ideal destination for sportsmen. Athletes head to these hills; Iveti hills and Kiima Kimwe for their training because of their high altitude. More so the hills create beautiful vantage points for scenery lovers

Kyamwilu which is located 10 kilometres along Machakos-Mutituni road on Kituluni hill is a famous site where water has defied Isaac Newton’s law of gravity and instead of flowing downwards the hill, it climbs up with an admirable ease.

Koma rock shrine is another destination place and is located eastwards towards Kangundo road. This place is famous and a special place for making prayers and locals from different churches all over the country frequents it for prayers and retreats.

For those who enjoy green scenery and beautiful rock designs, Makongo valley offers a great attraction to adventure tourists who want to explore the 40km stretch by motorbikes. Along the road, there exist friendly structures for selling food and artefacts to travellers.
